Isn't it wonderful? :)

Regarding the Oden, "yes," you can drink the wonderful made-from-scratch Oden Broth that comes with each small order. They should've provided you with a wooden spoon for your first Oden order (and they can replace it or you can keep using it for other Oden pieces later). They might've been busy and unfortunately overlooked it?

Also, it's OK to drink soup directly from the little bowls (unless you had a larger stoneware bowl for certain larger items). :)Exile Kisshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07510114278526493928noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3432738012032826252.post-35025157509073270442009-07-05T09:35:51.416-07:002009-07-05T09:35:51.416-07:00All I can say is --wow! My favorites were the plum sauce yakitori and also the thigh yakitori. This was my first time to try oden--now I am a big fan. My question to you is...is one supposed to consume all the broth as well as the food item that is served? If so, how? It wasn't until later in the meal that we got one of those little wooden spoons, and I wasn't too sure on what to do. The broth is so good, I was sad to waste it. Your photos showed smaller portions than we were served..so I ended up over-ordering a little. No problem though, the leftovers were good too! I was a little bummed that even though we arrived when they opened up....all the tables in the front were reserved and we had to sit way in the back. Next time I will reserve a seat at the counter for sure. This place is in my neighborhood..I literally pass it daily--I have a feeling I might become a regular. Thank you for a wonderful review.MaryRuthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01287095294067029081noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3432738012032826252.post-70449734759218757532009-06-18T17:45:20.991-07:002009-06-18T17:45:20.991-07:00Hi Matt L.,

I had never had oden before and I think I have a new favorite food ;)

Question for you: Do you know what the other spice (not the shichimi togarashi) on the table was? It looked like rubbed sage. Tasting it directly on my tongue was one of the most unusual taste sensations I have ever experienced - numbness then gritty then extremely sour. I don't think their was any heat to it which is what made the numbness so unusual.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3432738012032826252.post-56454011456982125902009-03-16T08:29:00.000-07:002009-03-16T08:29:00.000-07:00Hi Gordon,Thanks. :) Ooh! We were also able to get a picture with Mizutani himself and he also gave us a little book that he wrote (it's in japanese, so I'm unable to read it unfortunately). After eating all the good food in Japan, we decided to check out your blog and saw Torihei and went last night. The yakitori and oden items were really good and not expensive at all. Makes me wonder what Yakitori Bincho was like. Izakaya Bincho and Torihei are now two of my favorite places to eat!
